Australian Gymnastics Championships to stay in Melbourne for remainder of Olympic cycle

Gymnastics Australia is excited to announce that its premier domestic event – the Australian Gymnastics Championships – will remain in Melbourne in the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

With the support of the Victorian Government, Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV) and the Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust (MOPT), the Australian Gymnastics Championships will be held at Melbourne Arena in both 2019 and 2020.

The Australian Gymnastics Championships is the ultimate display of elite gymnastics in Australia, and for the first time all six competitive Gymsports will be in action at the one event from 2019.

This will include the Olympic disciplines of Men’s Artistic, Women’s Artistic, Rhythmic and Trampoline Gymnastics, as well as Acrobatic Gymnastics, and for the first time Aerobic Gymnastics will join the multi-Gymsport event in 2019.

Gymnastics Australia’s CEO, Kitty Chiller, said that after already hosting five successful Australian Championships in the Melbourne and Olympic Parks precinct, she is excited that the event will remain in one of the country’s best world-class sporting facilities.

“It is fantastic news that we will be returning to the newly-named Melbourne Arena for the Australian Gymnastics Championships in both 2019 and 2020, in the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” Ms Chiller said.

“We are excited to continue working with Sport and Recreation Victoria and the Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust to continue to deliver a high-quality Australian Championships that showcases excellence both on and off the competition floor.

“We would like to thank Victorian Minister for Sport John Eren MP and the Victorian Government for their commitment to supporting the continual development and growth of gymnastics in the state, with both the FIG World Cup Gymnastics Melbourne and Australian Championships to be held at Melbourne Arena for the next two years.”

Minister for Sport, John Eren said the Victorian Government was proud to once again bring the country’s best gymnasts to Melbourne.

The 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships will be held from May 20 to June 4, with the dates for the 2020 edition to be released closer to the event.
